If this really does not work,
I would download (or buy) Knoppix,
and run "grub-install /dev/hda" from the Knoppix CD.


I can second that. Knoppix is a wonderful collection of tools.
I use it regularly. Hope that isn't heresy on FC?

But also booting rescue, using chroot /mnt/sysimage and looking
in /sbin/grub should work.
