if this is the case with mDNSResponder & howl can they both be removed from the system? if so, how ? i just assume not to have anything on my notebook that i'm NOT going to ever need or use.
The only way to remove it, is to remove GNOME, and bunch of other desktop applications (mozilla, firefox, thunderbird, openoffice, to name few) that depend on GNOME in one way or the other.

Since you probably are not going to go that far, the best you can do for now is:
# chkconfig mDNSResponder off # /etc/init.d/mDNSResponder stop
