Perhaps it is because ftp servers are almost nothing like file
servers and trying to cover up the differences would make people
think it was a reasonable thing to attempt.  If all of your
operations involve whole files you might be able to get by, but
if that is the case you can just point nautilus (and some of the
other file manager/browsers at
ftp://username:password@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

What is it you need to do?  There are hundreds of ways to move files
around.  Rsync and scp are probably better than ftp if they are
available on the server.
