As near as I can tell grub2 is a classic example of

It is supposed to be easier to add support for
different filesystems with loadable modules and
wot-not.

The current state of grub2 manual can be found at

http://grub.enbug.org/Manual

It has a section on the differences between grub and
grub2 - none of them stand out to me as any kind of
dramatic improvement.
