The key to getting it set up initially was to get the firmware RPM from
Livna, then delete all network devices in system-config-network, then
reboot. Then you can recreate the wireless interface as wireless. (If
you run the 1.1.2 driver, you need firmware version 3.0. I have an RPM
that contains it that I can send on request.)
Help me out with a bit of brainlock here: how do I determine the driver
version? And where is the source for ipw2200?

The stock FC5 update kernel comes with 1.0.8. The full set of
installation instructions for the latest driver is at the top of
http://www.ces.clemson.edu/linux/fc2-ipw2200.shtml (although I think you
need the 3.0 firmware for the 1.1.2 driver).
