I would not say "horribly broken" /etc/hosts file, but in a form that it
causes problems. As I already posted better change it to

127.0.0.1  localhost.localdomain  localhost
your_IP    satyr.bogus.jl  satyr

I suspect you have a network card in your PC which has an IP.
