Whatever I can't remember. I have to thank you for suggesting running the GUI though cos this has let me fix my problem. [I'd always just edited the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 by hand before] I hadn't realised that putting DEVICE=eth1 in the file ifcfg-eth0 was the way to map eth0 to eth1. This has got me going so a big thanks for your help.
