Hi all and esp Chadley.

I need his shared dir on his computer.
What will it be called on his computer?

It will be called whatecer he has called it.
eg: I i have a folder on my xp box I right click on it and select
"sharing and security" I then have the option to name a share and give
it access to who ever I choose.
You can do this by asking the owner of the box to create the share or
give you the detail you require as you wrote above.

I also will need a password and user name on his box. Should I have him
create an account for me with a password, or use an already existing
account/password.

Either or, as long as he gives the user account the necessary
permissions.

The sambaserver sort of confuses me. I am letting him view a directory
on my machine? Where do I add an ip address? or do I.
The samba server is for you <linuxbox> to share files for him <winbox>.

It works as follows A do you have samba server installed?
click the fedora menu button found on the taskbar usually at the bottom
left corner of the screen, just like the windows start button.
in the menu select the system settings followed by server settings.

You will need to put your root password in.

First you need to setup the workgroup and user for your samba server, This is to give the winbox a username and passwd to access your shares
<on the linuxbox>
The click add and select your directory that you want to share.

From the winbox when you browse the network and locate this share it
will ask for a username & password put the details for the user created
in your samba server ==> preferences ==> users section.

Now the winbox owner or you yourself <If the owner will let you and the
winbox is physically with you> can create a user account or use an
existing account which you will use from the linuxbox's side.

Now this is becoming a win tutorial, but heck lets do it sorry Linux
users,

In windows if you right click the folder you wish to share in explorer.
<right click the "My Computer" Icon on the desktop ==> explorer>
You will see <or should> an option in the popup menu "Sharing and
Security" click on it.

The following screen should look as follows:
There are 4 tabs at the top of the window,
General
Sharing
Security
Customise

Select Sharing
click share this folder
in the share name text box enter the name you want this share to be
called and keep it simple no spaces cause it makes it tricky to mount on
the linuxbox. something like "music" or "winfiles" try not useing things
like "My Documents"

Ok now at the bottom right corner of the window there is a button called
"Permissions" click it
you will get a new window.

The top is labelled Permissions for <yourfoldername>
There are two boxes in this window the top box lists current users, the
bottom box lists the permissions.
By clicking the user entry you can then edit what permissions that users
has in the bottom block.

Or you can add an EXISTING user to the list. If the user does not exist
the use the usermanger to create one <you can seek and destroy that
yourself it in the control panel>

The click OK
you are now back on the first window, Click the "Security" tab you will
see the same looking window as in permissions. add the user here and his
rights. Just remeber to give the same access as in permissions.
Note if you dont add the user to security you will not be able to gain
access from any kind of box.

Are you still with me?

This is a bit confusing.

Thanks
so far
Aaron
