I have to installations of XP/SP3 under qemu-kvm (w/o libvirt), both of
which working just fine.
Both with ACPI and SMP.

Could you post the resulting qemu-kvm command line?
(Start the VM, locate its PID [ps -AH | grep qemu-kvm], and then post
its command line from /proc/$PID/cmdline)
