Hi Jack,
I'm using Netbeans 6.7 and OpenJDK too, nothing to complain about. SVN works great in Netbeans. I'm also using Netbeans for PHP and _javascript_ development.
Used Eclipse for a while, but when a started to play with Netbeans I've changed my mind.

ps: If you are going to learn Java I suggest you to read about the framework Hibernate, it rocks!
