Well, your view of the issue seems more or less identical to mine, from your other posting in the thread today, which I find encouraging, as your postings always seem helpful to me. Doubtless the OP's system is in a mess (whose isn't?) but if I were in his position I would prefer to get CUPS running, and then sort out all the other problems later.
