I think the eventual plan is to be able to install a normal
distribution OS for any client you wish to boot to make it easier to
run local apps and to maintain with updates. The current version has
specially-compiled kernels and apps and only has versions for intel
and ppc CPUs. The setup uses the MAC address range to detect Macs
and boot the right kernel.
The k12ltsp (K12OSN) mail list is a good resource for thin client
issues. http://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/k12osn
That sounds more like what I want to do. I'll be keeping an eye on it.
LTSP seems to be very close to what I want. If it had better support for
wireless networking, it would be pretty much what I want.
Another option is to boot something like Knoppix from CD with "linux 3"
at the boot prompt so it will start in text mode, then do
X -query server
to log into a desktop on a machine running xdm (kdm/gdm).
