You are probably right.
But if the ESSID was set, wouldn't iwconfig show it?

I agree about the MODE.
Changing to Auto, Adhoc or Managed often seems to do the trick,
though I have never understood why.

I find wifi-radar quite useful sometimes.
I think it uses the same approach as NetworkManager,
which means that it does not work with all WiFi cards.
