I don't set up as an expert,
but I would have thought you needed to set the ESSID
(to that of the target machine).

Personally, I set it in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1

        # Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection
        DEVICE=eth1
        ONBOOT=yes
        BOOTPROTO=dhcp
        HWADDR=00:15:00:16:2a:ea
        IPADDR=192.168.2.4
        ESSID=dd-wrt
        KEY=<...>

But you could set it with iwconfig, something like

        sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid <whatever>
