Using the "-j" option with TAR is much slower than "-z", and gives not much more compression. Also, use of compressed formats with backups is slightly controversial. Compressed formats are much less forgiving of medium errors, a point which should be considered. I use a compressed format, but it was a decision I made with my eyes open.
