There isn't a complete tie between that linear walk and the open - which
must then do a lookup of sorts. The kernel does try and cache namespaces
that are looked up/walked in the dcache.
It's simply not a real world case in any kind of normal use.
Backuppc is a very real world use case. It is so handy everyone should
be running it: http://backuppc.sourceforge.net/ It works pretty well as
long as you don't try to traverse the whole directory tree or copy the
archive with a file-oriented mechanism.
