Given this, I have one suggestion that would only take you a few minutes to 
try. Download/install wifi-radar from extras, and give it a try. I've had 
excellent success with that app, and it's amazingly easy to install. It runs 
in user-space and when you start it up it immediately finds all available 
wireless networks. It's got simple configuration GUI's for setting up ssid 
and keys and such - on my laptop which has rejected many other approaches, 
including using other distros, I've had excellent results using ndis-wrapper 
and now the new bcm43xx drivers and wifi-radar.
