News: this morning I tried "yum install gnome-panel" -- and it worked!
What's more, it *just* worked -- without even mentioning any dependencies,
other downloads, or anything.

So apparently the repos -- or at least the ones my configuration accesses
-- did indeed catch up.

I am of course delighted. All the more so, since yum update has just also
succeeded :

And so has yum clean all. So do I still need to cope with those long
lines? Or am I safe? Safe enough to close my apps, log out and back in
(and if necessary reboot), and try to get my Gnome desktop back?
