You can also configure evolution or similar MUAs to download
directly via POP while leaving a copy on the server, and
configure the gmail account to archive a copy when downloaded.
That way you can read with your favorite reader and delete
as you go but can later use the gmail web interface to search
the messages if you need to go back.

Or, if your MUA handles multiple accounts correctly, you can
configure it to use the gmail From: address when using
that account.

Gmail does a reasonable job of filtering into a spam folder on
its own.
