Sorry, I don't entirely understand your question. You don't need to
run Thunderbird as root; just go into terminal, and use sudo (or root)
to change the permissions of that directory so that anyone (chmod o+w)
can write to it. Then Thunderbird can install the XPIs.

Exactly... FC4 release install it in /usr/lib/thunderbird-1.0.7/components
Don't be afraid if you cannot see extension in Tools/Extensions list ...
restart Thunderbird and spell your mail.
