You need to change the permissions of this directory: ../thunderbird/components/myspell so that you can write to it (# chmod og+w ...). Then, reinstall the .xpi file and restart Thunderbird. You should then find the additional language now listed under the Spell button on the Compose window. Everytime you install Thunderbird you will have to repeat this process. -- Colin Brace Amsterdam
