Do a cat /etc/hosts It should start with 0.127.0.1 localhost localhost If you do not find that line, then su to root and edit the file so that it is in there. As far as dns lookups are concerned, try dig www.example.com or dig www.yahoo.com Those shouldn't take more then one or max two seconds. If it takes a long time (like 20+ secs) then you might consider contacting your isp or change the order of the dns servers in your /etc/resolv.conf file.
