I've just used yum update to install the newer packages of nvidia-glx and kernel-module-nvidia-<kernel> and so far everything is working fine. There is still no i686 version of nvidia-glx, only a i586 version, but it is causing me no problems (and I'm running an i686 kernel and upgrade over a i686 version of the driver). The problem was with the older packages of the new driver, not with the i586 vs i686 issue. I do wonder what the reason was for dropping the i686 packages was, though.
