hmmm, I have installed FC3 on a Sony Z505 which is notorious for Linux problems without any of the issues you report. As a matter of fact, it runs better than the old Windows 98 that was on it. The Windows would cause the battery to misread and shutdown, even after a reinstall. FC3 runs the full 2-2.5 hours without complaint.
In addition, I have it installed on several custom builds with Intel motherboards, and a Dell XPS233 desktop. All without incident.
No problems with modem/dialup, openoffice, network, etc. I would be interested in hearing some of the more specific details of what you are experiencing.
