John, I really recommend to use the list archive as resource for
searches. The bootdisk topic is discussed to extend.

The kernel and all the rest what goes to a boot floppy is in most cases
too big to fit on this very limited space. You may have luck and your
kernel and ramdisk image is small enough.

Boot with CD1 into rescue mode, chroot /mnt/sysimage and run mkinitrd.
If that fails because of size install grub with grub-install /dev/hda.
