Yes, the change to directly support ATAPI drives is more recent.

hdparm -i /dev/hdX

Prints out for my CD burner for instance:

Model=PLEXTOR CD-R PX-W2410A, FwRev=1.04, SerialNo=218747

where FwRev is here the firmware revision.
