Andy,

I believe that doing the compile of XFce from sprms is trivial, I suggest that you look up the rpmbuild command, and I think that you will find that rpmbuild --rebuild mysrcrpm.src.rpm is what you have to issue to get things to fly or get the ball rolling.

I think that on XFce's site there are build instructions. I mean the order, I have put the latest XFce rpms on http://www3.telus.net/~dharsha4 if you want them. I compiled them on FC2 so if you have FC2 then have fun !

Great!! I haven't compiled too many major programs like this. Any
pitfalls or gotchas that I should be aware of?

I compiled the srpms from http://www.xfce.org as I ran into the problem mentioned below. It seems that the compiled version from XFce via srpms works just A-Okay !

I would like to play with XFCE 4. I installed the rpms on the CD's and
they didn't work very well. xffm lacked icons, and when I logged in,
things were really weird looking. So, I updated things with the rpms on
the newrpms site. Sigh, no change. I'm still missing icons and I get
weird errors when I log into xfce.

Has anyone else had this problem, and what did you do about it?

There have been problems using XFCE4 as installed by default under FC2.

You might want to review the article here:

for more information.

I am running the current CVS version of XFCE (4.1.x) and love it.
