Hmmm... Dual Opteron...
Are you running a 64 bit kernel? <insert version>
Are you running a 32 bit kernel? <insert version>
Are you running a SMP kernel?	 <insert version>
Are you running a non FC2 distribution driver?  <insert version>

For the sake of diagnosing the problem and perhaps stability you might
setup to run single processor.  Disable the second processor
and run a stock single processor version of the kernel.

Since you are running KVM you might also take the KVM out of the loop
by adding a dedicated keyboard and mouse.  With X over ssh on a local
network I hardly use my KVM except to boot.

The lack of symptoms smells like a multi processor lock
problem to me.  These can be painful to diagnose.
