If you post some sample raw headers from the messages in question, someone here who's knowledgeable on this topic will explain to you why the messages in questions are not formatted correctly.
When using POP3, your mail client is responsible for decoding messages. When using IMAP, the IMAP server is mostly responsible.
It's likely that the messages in question are not correctly formatted. Your mail client happens to decode them, but the UW-IMAP is more strict, and refuses to do so. In either case, the problem will be with the sender's software.
