However, the GATEWAY must be within that range unless he is using IPLESS connections. He said there is a router connected, so this should be the subnet on the private side of the router and the gateway would be the routers IP address.

You say 3 other machines are connected via a router. What is the gateway address used by the router for the modem connection?
This machine should likely have the same gateway, and it can get set in the file you sent earlier. (ifcfg-eth0 I believe)

And your router is running windows XP so you can use this command on it??????
Somehow I think you are confused in either the answer or in what you are doing to answer my question.
It seems likely this may be the gateway your box is using for the (private) interface on the router, and that would be fine. If so then set the gateway on the linux box to the same.
If I am not correct then please try again on either the answer or the way you got the answer.
The static IP of the router is not the same as the gateway address the router uses.
