gateway would be the routers IP address.
The linux machine is connected to the modem directly thru the hub,
three other machines are connected via a router to the hub. The
problem seems to be with the Gateway address. What configuration
files should I edit to make sure the right address is listed?

You say 3 other machines are connected via a router. What is the
gateway address used by the router for the modem connection?
This machine should likely have the same gateway, and it can get set
in the file you sent earlier. (ifcfg-eth0 I believe)
The gateway used by the router (according to ipconfig in windozeXP) is
192.168.2.1 (default). This router has a static IP of 142.179.210.24
