Looks like your dagger hit something. :-)
I set my two screens at home to 1024x768 and was able to log out with
C-A-backspace.  After fiddling about some more, I couldn't get anything 
better with dual head, so I set it back to single head.  1600x1200 on a 
single monitor trumps 1024x768 on two.

In some previous experiments, I had it fail on the third logout.  This
time it kept going, even when I ran 2 X servers on dual head.

One final thought...
Were you running with spanning mode or separate workspaces?  I'd test,
but I'm being paged by my wife...
