I also needed to run xfs by hand. Here is a tip if you are using the nVidia driver, which on my machine does not work properly on the virtual terminals (Ctrl-Alt F1, etc). At the grub prompt you can type a key (a I think) to append the kernel command line. If you add linux 3 here then you will come up in runlevel 3, ie, without X. Then you can use vi to change the /etc/X11/XF86Config situation.
