Below is good advice. I had the same thing happen to me but did not want to re-install for many reasons. My fix: 1) Mount each of the 3 installation CDs and search Fedora/RPMs directories for XFree86* 2) rpm -i Xfree* (from each CD) 3) rpm -i xfs (the fonts) When I did the steps 1 and 2 and rebooted I was able to get my Xwindows back (Konsole). However ,the windows text was missing (ie, request for "Username", "Password", etc.) I logged in blindly and clicked on the "up2date" icon and though unable to read any text was able to run "up2date" again blindly (literally a shot in the dark) and it finished the install.
