Wireless NIC firmware

I have an SMC2632w wireless pcmcia adapter. I got it in a package with
an access point. On bootup it says it's running version 0.8 Intersil
fireware. It then complains that it's an old version of firmware, and
alot of tools aren't available.

Can I upgrade the firmware on these cards? Would the linux-wlan-ng
drivers be better?

I have connectivity, but none of the advanced reporting works from the
card.
