If you want to losetup, mke2fs, mount, cp, umount, etc. all by
hand, sure.

lvm does not require mkinitrd for general use. An initrd is only
required for root on LVM.

The dependency is there as a convenience to avoid broken systems.
As I said, if it tasks you, file a bug.
