The problem is that modern UNIX GUIs do follow the hardware evolution and that 
users do demand run-time objects, complex interaction of tools and eye 
candies. That all comes with a price as desktop environments are designed to 
be very object oriented and thus very memory hungry.

Have you tried running IceWM or fvwm2 as a window manager ? The applictions 
will still be a problem, but Opera and/or Mozilla Firebird could maybe work 
on this configuration.

However :) you will need to upgrade the memory... 32MB is very little for a 
desktop. Small server will work (I'd still put at least 64MB into it, just to 
be on the safe side), I have a K6-166/64MB serving 120GB worth of files with 
Samba and NFS, running Squid, CVS, ssh, ISC dhcpd, Bind and Apache. It works 
like a charm :).
