Just out of interest, you could try a rebuild against wxGTK2 and see
whether it also suffers from the same performance problems:

http://home.arcor.de/ms2002sep/tmp/audacity-nonfree-1.2.6-1.lvn5.GTK2.i386.rpm ...

Sure... That build works great for me. No UI lag with any of the files I tried. It can be a little CPU-hungry with 55' of audio, but not drastically moreso (if at all) than the 1.2.4 you pointed to.

I installed compat-wxGTK2-2.4.2-21.fc5 from Fedora Extras as a prerequisite.

Does that mean you don't recommend using this 1.2.6 for actual work? Or just to be prepared for some 'surprises'?
