I would think that the outbound 119:tcp port would be needed.  NNTP is a
plain text protocol.  It's kind of like POP3 and IMAP in that if you can
"speak the language" you can do it all with telnet.

You shouldn't need any specific inbound ports open.


No extra ports needed to be added afterall. The news service works fine without the added rules. I was probably just catching the news.redhat.com server at a busy time for the earlier failure to happen.
