I did try to start with three previous kernels I still had - I also 
removed the nVidia proprietary driver and all it's tentacles and 
reverted to nouveau - nothing has fixed the problem; Marko and I have 
both looked through the log files I posted a link to elsewhere in this 
thread, but saw no smoking gun...it's very strange
