It's a Nvidia 9600GT that has worked on a different motherboard for a year.
I'm using the Nvidia drivers so nouveau is already blacklisted so the
proprietary driver can load.

I can try these. I am suspecting that it is disk writes that are
causing the problem,
maybe with some kind of shared IRQ issue, because I can watch
prerecorded HD video,
reading from the disk for hours and sending it to the video card, with
no problem, but
starting yum and downloading info from the repos or reencoding video
can lock it right up.

This is an AMD 770 chipset based board. Maybe there are some improvements in
2.6.32 for that chipset.
