Have you looked at http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_devices/index.html ?
There's also http://hplip.sourceforge.net/faqs.html from where you'll find a 
link to Launchpad - their ticketing sysem for problems.  If your printer is 
listed as supported (and I don't recall you ever said what model it is) and 
you can't get hplip to see it, use Launchpad.  They are very helpful.
