Even hardware players have such problems.  It annoys me, no end, that
despite having preset my player for my preferred language, a plethora of
discs always ask me what language I want to play, and still others
default to playing the wrong language and/or turning on subtitles.

I'd be suspicious that your discs are badly authored.
