Sorry, no that's not what I intended to suggest.  If the camera is
working, Skype should see it.

On the other hand, I had the following mysterious experience the other
day:  Suddenly, Skype wouldn't see the camera (same symptoms you
describe).   After fooling around with a couple of other camera apps and
rebooting (and I don't recall for sure in what sequence I did these
things), it started working again.

Do you have the latest Skype, latest kernel, latest version of your
camera driver?
