Search the web for CPU performance tests and you will find that AMD
Athlons lag in multimedia. Intel had a head start and AMD has not
caught up with the SSE and SSE2 instruction sets. Rolling an AMD
specific kernel will not solve this hardware limitation.

You might be able to get improved performance by changing from the
kernel's default I/O scheduler (CFQ). Don't know if this still works
but try appending "elevator=deadline", "elevator=noop", or
"elevator=as" to the kernel line in grub. More info regarding the I/O
