With the objective of eliminating any driver problems I left that computer
sitting at the bios setup screen for a while to see if the lines showed up
there.

And they did.

As I just posted in a new thread, I have now got an ATI video card in this
machine and have solved two problems (interference and the slow running
machine) and found a new one (resolution setting is too low.)
