sun is indifferent to where a jre/jdk lives

rpm's don't have the luxury of being indifferent but tarballs do.

Plenty of software vendors package sun's java with their software and it
will install anywhere...try installing Dell OMSA package on a Dell
Server

Again, since Sun builds the rpm, they have control over postinstall
scripts that can do whatever including building symlinks, installing
browser plugin in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins or whatever should occur on
an install process.
