well, maybe there's something different about your system

with mine, when I run that command, a dialog box comes up after a 
moment, and I can select various default applications - clicking 
on the down arrows in the fields give me various options for 
programs to run for web browsing and email - I select the ones I 
want, and then things just work - in my case, I select kmail, 
and after that, when I click on a mailto: or email link in 
Firefox, it opens kmail
