My current monitor only supports 1280x720. So you're saying it's only
a resolution problem? It would be just great then! :)

I'm in progress of upgrading my PC with an nVidia 8600GT (featuring
DVI and HDCP). Then I'll use HDMI input on my SONY TV to get the real
1920x1080.

You could try different video output options (see man mplayer) and see if you can watch it. You could also try the scaling options to downscale the video to fit your resolution.

mplayer is so powerful, I wish it was the default multimedia player in Fedora.
