I wouldn't recommend it to a new user, either.  But if it's the only
thing already there, and you can't install something else, you'd want to
know how to make use of it.

I never use it beyond the basic level.  I can't remember the way to cut
and paste, even.  I'll use the GUI version for anything other than
simple typing with it.  ;-)

Way back when I used the Amiga I'd tried to have a go at emacs (as
"memacs," on the Amiga).  The hotkeys were horrendous, completely
unintuitive, and the menus weren't crash hot, either.

The edit/command mode switching of vi isn't particularly intuitive, but
then a few other console editors, also, leave you stranded with no way
to figure out how to save or exit.
